Energy Saving Solar Gain - Light or Dark, Translucent or Opaque - Which is Best?
There is something of a debate going on regarding the pros and cons of opaque and black covers versus clear covers that let light through. In order to heat your pool, you definitely need to let the sunshine through. Whilst a clear solar cover will let the sun’s rays through, a tinted cover will be able to retain more heat, and a solar pool cover with a reflective underside will be able to hold on to even more heat.
Especially if you are away for much of the year, this is because an opaque cover will keep the light out, thus reducing the growth of algae which turns the swimming pool water green. Black opaque swimming pool solar covers can also be used indoors where solar gain is not an issue. A black or opaque cover makes it a cheaper alternative to superior insulation foam covers.
